On November 1, 2018, Alda Elizabeth "Betty" Riley passed away in Silver Spring, MD. She was the daughter of the late Alda M. Payne and Clayton E. Payne, Sr. and is survived by her sister Margaret V. Dodge and brother Clayton E. Payne, Jr.; daughters Heather D. Riley and Monica L. Hoybach (Ricky) and three grandchildren, Riley, Olivia and Ivy Hoybach. Alda grew up in a loving family in Washington, DC. The youngest of three children, she adored her siblings and all that they could teach her. From a young age, she was known by the family as "Tink" due to her pixie-style hair and cherubic face. Alda had a passion for all living things; plants, people and animals. She was a St. Francis of the 20th century and would spoil them to no end. She adored her grandchildren and loved watching them grow into young adults. Alda enjoyed a long and successful career at NIH (National Institutes of Health) as Editor-in-Chief in Communications, securing stability for herself and her children. Memorial donations may be made to a local chapter of the SPCA. A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery 4111 Pennsylvania Ave, Suitland, MD 20746. Friends wishing to pay their last respects should arrive by 10:15 a.m. to proceed to her site.
