A Minister was born Rev. Algernon Lorenzo Lassiter, the sixth child of the late Rufus and Sarah Harrell Lassiter was born on December 21, 1927 in Sunbury, NC. A Ministers walk with God At an early age Algernon accepted Christ and joined Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Sunbury, NC. He continued in faithful service until he moved to Maryland with his daughter. Whenever he returned to Sunbury he would always visit his home church. He loved Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church with all his heart. Ministers was taught Rev. Lassiter attended Gates Training High School later named T. S. Cooper High School, Sunbury, North Carolina. In the area of professional training, he completed five years of specialized training in Theology at the Roanoke Collegiate Institute, a branch of Shaw University, Elizabeth City, North Carolina and graduated in 1985. That fall, he attended the College of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City, North Carolina and was presented a Certificate for Completion of a Prescribed Study in Communication Skills and the Bible. He graduated from the Roanoke Theological Seminary in 1995 with a Bachelor of Divinity Degree and was presented a Certificate of Achievement for an Outstanding Student. Rev. Lassiter went on an Educational Trip to the Holy Land in Jerusalem, Israel and was given one-year credit for the Study of the Bible. In 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years. He is a Veteran of World War II. A Ministers at work Algernon retired from Gwaltney of Smithfield after twenty-three years. Served as pastor of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Paul Branch Baptist Church, and Saint Mary's Holiness Church. A Ministers time to love Algernon married Elsie Horton on April 12, 1947. They were the proud parents of one daughter. He was a loving and devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and godfather. He was very family oriented. A Ministers time to serve Being called into the ministry Rev. Lassiter was one of the acting Deacons of the youth of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. His activities also included being a Sunday School Teacher, singing in the Senior Choir and singing in the County Male Choir, which he helped to organize. In the area of church affiliations, he was called to the Christian ministry on January 14, 1962 and licensed to preach by Rev. Elijah H. Griffin at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Sunbury, North Carolina. He was ordained April 5, 1966 at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Following his ordination, he became Assistant Pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and called to serve as Pastor in 1967. He served for two years as Pastor of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church. He served with the youth at White Oak Missionary Baptist Church, Tyner, North Carolina for eighteen months. He was the pastor of St. Mary's Independent Holiness Church, Suffolk, Virginia. Rev. Lassiter was also the Pastor of Paul Branch Baptist Church, Suffolk, Virginia for over thirty years, he retired December 2008. He joined Fort Foot Baptist Church, Fort Washington, MD under watch care in 2013 he attended until his health declined. Rev. Lassiter is past Vice President, and has served as Secretary, of the Gates County Church Fellowship, and was a member of the Ministerial Alliances of Virginia. He served many years in Evangelism service of Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association, and two years as a Counselor of Woman's Missionary and Education Auxiliary to the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association. He was a member of Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association; Trustee Board of Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association, Ministerial Alliances of Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association, General Baptist State Convention, and Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention. A Ministers Doing the work of Him who sent me “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him whom sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:4-5 Algernon was always trying to make certain that everyone he met at the doctor’s office the hospital even when he went out to eat, he would ask do you know Jesus and if they were saved. He would ask the doctors, nurses and patients if they had said their prayers today and did they know Jesus. He did not care where he was he wanted to make certain they knew Jesus. He was not concerned what faith they were. He took his ministry serious. He never stopped praising God through the pain or whatever state he was in. Rev. Lassiter was always in the presence of God. He had an altar wherever he when and would let you know that. A Ministers time to mourn Rev. Algernon Lorenza Lassiter leaves to cherish his memory his daughter: Dorothy Lassiter Hopkins (Samuel) of Clinton, MD, granddaughter; Joy Hopkins of Camp Springs, MD; two sisters Naomi Howell of Portsmouth, VA and Ernestine Bond of Sunbury, NC; his god children: Tova Gatling, Chanika Jones and Roger Parker, three god great grandchildren Teresa Chapman (Daniel), Cameron Schmidt, and Patricia Queen; honorary granddaughter Wynsday Jenkins, grand-dog Benjamin Hopkins. He always escorted him wherever he was going and jump up in his lap, gave him kisses. He would say no more kisses Benji!! A host of dear nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Rev. Lassiter is finally with his beloved Elsie and with Jesus. In his own words would, say "My Lord”!!! Rev. Algernon Lassiters Favorites: Saying: MY LORD!!!
