Alta Patricia Hoffman

Alta P. Hoffman, 62, of Hyattsville, MD, died suddenly on July 18, 2015 at Celebration Hospital in Kissimmee, Florida. Born in Salisbury (Rowan County), North Carolina on March 22, 1953 to the late Myrtle Cherry and Junior Fleming, Alta was the fourth daughter of eight children. After leaving Salisbury, she completed her formative education in the Washington D.C. public school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl K. Hoffman, one sister, Betty Ann Cherry and two brothers, Thomas Fleming and Larry Partee. On January 31, 2013, Alta retired from the United States Postal Service after 40 years of dedicated services, where she held a position as a Postal Clerk. There she was affectionately known as Cherry. Alta was a dedicated wife, loving and nurturing mother, grandmother, and a surrogate mother to many youngsters who came into her life. Her life centered upon family tradition as evidenced by the many special gatherings she hosted in her home. Her heart remained open to her family and friends. She was the President and Treasurer of the Maryland Chapter of Johnson and Graham family reunion committee. She enjoyed traveling on family vacations and hitting the road with her sisters Sue and Tia. She was an active member of Praise Redemption Worship Center in Lothian, Md. She could not wait until Sunday mornings to hear the divine Word from Bishop Huggins. She leaves to cherish fond memories; devoted daughter Chaprella Collins (Prell) of Hyattsville, MD; loving granddaughters Brianna Watson (TaVon) of Kissimmee, FL and Jaelyn Lipscombe of Hyattsville, MD; stepchildren Anthony Frazier of Arlington, VA , Pamela Brown of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Angela, Marcellus, LaShone, and Kenneth Hoffman of Washington, DC; siblings Sarah McLendon of Temple Hills, MD, Laura Cherry and Jerome Cherry both of Hyattsville, MD, William Daniels of Washington, DC, Reginald Daniels of Bladensburg, MD, Fonda White of Beltsville, MD; Danny Fleming (Daila) of Fayetteville, NC; Darry Fleming, Timothy B. Fleming (Madeline), Sylvia Farley (Henry), Linda Flowers (Jerome), Lori Fleming, all of Newton, NC, Diane Saunders of Statesville, NC and Bobby Partee, Mooresville, NC; one uncle Joseph Johnson (Jan), of Olney, MD; two aunts Anne Lanear (Edward) of Rocky Mount, NC and Roberta Hawkins of Salisbury, NC; two sister-in-laws Pearl McGahee of Camden, New Jersey; Catherine Russell of Washington, D.C.; two brother-in-laws Jimmie and Leroy Hoffman of Virginia; two special nieces Charmette Hall and Chalonda Newman (Eric); one special nephew, Dwayne Carter; two god-daughters Deborah Clayton and Monica Graham; three god-sons Jerome and Stacy Watson and Sean Pulliam, and many loving family members and friends. Family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, 3600 Brightseat Rd., Landover, MD 20785 on Friday, July 31, 2015 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Services will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will take place Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Pleasant Valley Memorial Park, 8420 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003 at noon.
