He served as a Medical Technician in the Viet Nam War. After his military service, he attended Washington Technical College in Washington, DC. André met his former wife Carolyn Battle in 1971 and they married in 1974. Andre and Carolyn spent many memorable occasions with family and friends during their marriage. One of André’s favorite pastimes was listening to oldies and singing Karaoke, especially the Temptations, Earth Wind & Fire, and the O ’Jays. André was a fun-loving person who could talk and debate for hours. He also liked to hand dance and bop. André was very opinionated and did not mind telling you when you were wrong. André adored children and let them have their way by allowing them to eat all the candy and sweets they wanted. André was loved by many family members, friends, and was called grandfather to several children he cared for.
