Devoted Christian, father of three, SMSgt Archie Quinton Evans (Ret.) passed away Friday, October 20, 2017. Archie was born in Washington, D.C. on February 17, 1939 to Archie Lee Evans and Violantia Loretta Service Evans. Archie graduated from Western High School in May of 1957 and married the love of his life Josephine Lena Swinton on September 20, 1958. He worked at the United States Capitol before enlisting in the Air Force at age 21, where he had a long career as an aircraft mechanic and ultimately a supervisor working with the 89th Squadron at Andrews AFB on Air Force One. He followed this work with a career as a mechanic at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo where, among many other accomplishments, he spent multiple years teaching adult men how to read. The accomplishments from his spiritual life paralleled his professional life - he was a devoted volunteer and community member of Mt. Calvary Catholic Church. His roles at Mt. Calvary included leading a couple’s bible study with his wife, volunteering for the school and lead ushering for the Saturday evening service. Archie was also an esteemed member of the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree. He is survived by: daughter, Nicole Elizabeth Evans; son, Aaron Scott Evans; daughter-in-law, Yulin Dudley; two grandchildren, Daisy Eleanor Dudley and Ina Lee Evans; as well as many relatives and close friends, including a brother, Larry Evans Sr., sister, Anne Evans and first cousin, Ramona Service. His wife of 57 years and his first born, Sean Joseph Evans preceded him in death. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Mt. Calvary Catholic Church, 6704 Marlboro Pike, Forestville, MD. Interment will take place at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
