Arlene M. Bland, of Upper Marlboro, MD passed suddenly on November 28, 2016 at the age of 73. Born in Washington, DC on July 18, 1943, Arlene was the youngest daughter of the late Margaret and Clarence Bland. Born with special needs, Arlene grew up in various residential group homes. Arlene resided in a residential group home in Upper Marlboro operated by the Arc of Prince George’s County. Arlene loved to travel to different places with her beloved father and in recent years. She especially enjoyed going to different beaches but by far, Disneyland was her favorite. Arlene went to Disneyland many times, always finding immense joy in “It’s A Small World”. Her sister, Elaine, recalled the many times that they spoke over the years. “Each time we spoke on the telephone, Arlene would always ask about my children, even after they weren’t children any more. When I would want to send her something as a gift, she would always reply that she needed pajamas, every single time. She was always very happy with the loving care that she received with the Arc of Prince George’s County”. Arlene had an excellent memory and could recall the many names and faces she has met over the years. Especially fond of the color red, Arlene loved to have her nails painted red and wearing red clothing with coordinating red jewelry. Also known for her tidiness, she liked keeping her belongings orderly and neat. Attending services at Fellowship Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro and singing her favorite hymnals was another pastime that she enjoyed. Arlene is survived by her sister, Elaine Baxter of Burlington, Iowa. She is also survived by her sister’s children, Katherine, Harry and John. Also survived by many extended family of the Arc of Prince George’s County, especially her caregivers and her longtime housemates—Darlene, Alfred and Mary.
