Arthur Lee Jenkins, 76, of Clinton, Maryland, passed peacefully with his family praying for him on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Arthur was born to the late Jacob Jenkins Sr. and Emma Reid on August 20, 1948, in Charleston, South Carolina.
He graduated from Haut Gap High School in John’s Island, South Carolina. At a young age he joined and was an active member of St. James A.M.E. Church in John's Island, SC. Shortly after graduating high school, he enlisted in the Armed Forces — and retired from the Army, as a Staff Sergeant, after 20 years and 28 days of dedicated service. After military retirement, he began a second career as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring after twenty plus years. During his career as a postal worker, he embarked on a spiritual educational journey earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Christian Education and a Doctorate Degree in Theology.
He was joined in holy matrimony to Shirley Mae Givens on August 14th, 1971.
Arthur and Shirley added to their family four children: Vanessa Jenkins of Chesapeake, VA; Reynecia Proctor (Gary) of Virginia Beach, VA; Arthur Jenkins II (Tanisha); and Jermaine Jenkins of Clinton, MD. He has a brother Jacob Jenkins Jr. (Loris) of Queens, NY; two sisters Ethel Thompson (Chris) of Charleston, SC; and Ruthie Rivers of Charleston, SC.
He joins in heaven his mother Emma Jenkins, father Jacob Jenkins Sr., sister Gloria Chisholm, aunts Isabelle Johnson, Margaret Glover, and uncle Willie Reid.
He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Jenkins, four children; Vanessa Jenkins, Reynecia Proctor (Gary), Arthur Jenkins II (Tanisha), and Jermaine Jenkins, nine grandchildren; Ma’Keisha, Precious, Jahze’el, Za’Nila, Taylor, Ariah, AJ III, Ashley and Domonique, two great grands; London and Ya’mani, his brother Jacob Jenkins Jr. (Loris) of Queens, NY, and his two sisters; Ethel Thompson (Chris) of Charleston, SC, and Ruthie Rivers of Charleston, SC.
He also leaves his memories among many friends, colleagues and other relatives.
He was a man of God who loved his wife and family; an excellent provider to them he was. He was a protective husband and dedicated and loving father, grandfather, uncle and caring nephew. He was a District Elder in his church and former President of the Eastern District Fellowship of Churches.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at Lee Funeral Home, Inc, Clinton, Maryland, on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 10:00am with funeral services beginning at 12:00pm. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
