Audrey Gene Miller1927 - 2013Audrey "Gene" Miller, 86, of Alexandria, VA died at Springhill Mt. Vernon, Alexandria, VA on Thursday December 5, 2013. Born in Washington, DC she was the youngest of four daughters born to the late Albert and Susan (Harrison) Owens. Her family thought she was going to be a boy and her father decided he would name her after the winner in a boxing match. Gene Tunney beat Jack Dempsey and after that they called here Gene. She graduated from Eastern High School. After graduation she took a job as a secretary with the Census Bureau in Suitland, MD. She has always loved to sing. She became an active member in chorus with the Census Bureau. Gene married the late John Miller and had sixty four years of marriage. Together they started their own interior design business. Gene's hobbies consist of music, singing, and collecting miniatures, such as Dept. 56. She created beautiful scenes under the Christmas tree. For almost thirty years Gene and John opened their home twice a year during the holiday season for others to come with their friends, have a good time and see the decorations.Gene was also very generous. During her seasonal open houses, she had an optional donation box for the Children's Hospital. Each year she made a donation. First Lady Nancy Reagan gave a luncheon at the White House to recognize the women in the Washington Area who helped others, especially the Children's Hospital. She has also sponsored three international children throughout the years.Survivors include two daughters, Dawn DeTurris (George), and Mandy Miller, a son Timothy Miller (Jennifer), five grandchildren, Christopher, Charity, Tony, Tyler, and Indigo, four great grandchildren, Jubilee, Christopher, Bella, and Miller.
