Barbara Ruth Mattis, 85, of Upper Marlboro, MD, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024, at Caribbean Breeze Assisted Living Home. Born on May 5, 1939, in Watertown, NY, Barbara was the eldest daughter of the late Edwin "Ned" Madill and Helen (Daines) Madill.
A proud graduate of Watertown High School, class of 1957, Barbara went on to marry the love of her life, Ronald Aaron Mattis, Sr., in January 1961 in her hometown of Watertown. The two met while Ron was stationed at Fort Drum Army Base. As a devoted military wife, Barbara moved with her husband through various postings, eventually settling in Upper Marlboro, MD, after Ron's final assignment at Joint Base Andrews.
Barbara enjoyed a successful career in the title settlement business, where she worked for 30 years before retiring in 1998. In her retirement, she split her time between Casselberry, FL, and the community she loved in Marlton, Upper Marlboro, MD. Barbara was deeply involved in her neighborhood, playing an active role in the homeowners' association, and she cherished the friendships she cultivated there. Her love for her community was matched only by her love for her family.
Above all, Barbara was a devoted grandmother. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she embraced not only her own family but extended family as well, earning the affectionate title of "G-ma" to many.
