Betty J. Smith\n \n \n \nBetty Joyce Smith, age 82, of Indiana, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. \nShe was born in 1929, in Atlanta, GA to Troy and Leona Upshaw Carroll, and grew up in Alpharetta, GA where she graduated from the Milton High School. Betty attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA, where she met her husband Smitty.\nMrs. Smith was a founding member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Upper Marlboro, MD, where she was actively involved for 40 years. Since moving to Indiana six years ago, she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Republican Women’s Club both in Maryland and Pennsylvania, and actively supported the Upper Marlboro Lions Club with her husband Smitty.\nBetty was employed as a payroll officer for the Prince George’s County Board of Education for 26 years before her retirement in 1991.\nShe was a devoted wife to her husband Smitty for 57 years, and a loving mother and grandmother. Betty was a generous hostess, a wonderful cook, and loved entertaining friends. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed attending their events and performances. Betty loved music, art, and traveling.\nBetty is survived by three daughters: Torie Holeman and husband Bill, Baton Rouge, LA; Ember DiSalvo and husband Frank, Upper Marlboro, MD; Kimberly Young and husband Keith, Indiana, PA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alexis (Holeman) Castillo and husband Jose; Lauren Holeman; Frank Jr., Thomas, Dillon, and Emberlein DiSalvo; Chelsea and Natalie Young; one great granddaughter, Aviah Castillo; one brother, Troy Carroll, Ft. Collins, CO; two nieces, Durand Hays and husband Rick, Cedar Hill, TX; Camille Lassetter and husband Rob, Ft. Collins, CO.\nShe was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband Elmer L. “Smitty” Smith in 2009, and by her sister-in-law Dorothy Carroll.\nFriends will be received at the Lee Funeral Home, Clinton, MD on Thursday, March 15 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 A.M. at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Upper Marlboro, MD. Interment will be made in the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, MD.
