Carol Darlene Hammer, 79 of Upper Marlboro, MD, died peacefully at home on April 11, 2021. Born on June 24, 1941 in Martin, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Minor Brooks Evans and Ethel Emily Feaster Evans. Carol spent her childhood in her beloved West Virginia, graduating from Petersburg High School in 1959. Upon graduation, she moved to the Washington, DC area, where she would start a simultaneous career as a government professional and mother of three children. Her first government stint was with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1959. She later transitioned to the Central Intelligence Agency, starting as an Administrative Assistant, and working her way to Branch Chief, a position she held until her retirement in 2005. Carol was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers – James A Evans and Junior Brooks Evans, grandson Derek Stephen Hammer and her former husband, Gary Steve Hammer. She is survived by her children Terry Hammer and his wife, Sherri, Micki Heineken and her husband Jeff, Michael Hammer, and his wife Christina and eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. While she was extremely proud of her professional career, Carol’s most important role was matriarch of her family. She had a special bond with each of her children which carried over to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Any member of her family knew they could go to her for anything. Her ability to simply listen crossed three generations. Her warmth, easy going personality and ability to connect to with each family member, will be greatly missed. She had lifelong friendship with Elvie Alexander. The two embarked on many adventures and would often spend Fridays together shopping, having lunch, or simply hanging out. Carol was an avid Washington Redskin fan and she loved to bird watch and tend to her plants, but her family and friends were her real hobby.
