Carrie Elizabeth Roach Hammett, 85, of Upper Marlboro, MD passed away on March 12, 2016. She was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, James Spicer and Dennis Hammett, Sr., and grandson Casey Cummings. She is survived by her loving daughters, Cherry Cummings (Donald) and Gay Topper (Roy), and devoted son, Barton Spicer; cherished grandchildren David Topper (Amy-Beth), Deena Cummings and Benjamin Cummings; and great-granddaughter, Annabella Topper. Carrie was born on March 1, 1931, at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Frederick B. Roach and Mary Adeline Elliott Roach and sister to Kenneth, Andrew and Alva. When she was six years old, they moved from Capitol Heights to their farm in Cheltenham, where she lived for the remainder of her life. In high school, Carrie was known for her basketball playing skills and, at six feet tall, was always the tallest member of the team. She was especially proud that in 1947 the Gwynn Park High School Girls’ Basketball team won the Class D Maryland State Championship against a very formidable opponent. In addition to being a wife, mother, homemaker and working on the family farm, she was employed for a time at Andrews Air Force Base and the Edgemeade School for Boys in Croom. She was very creative and enjoyed sewing, needlework and refinishing antique furniture. Every year she planted an abundance of flowers around her home, which were enjoyed by all who saw them, and was looking forward to doing the same again this year with her special friend, Chimere. Carrie was a faithful member of Cheltenham United Methodist Church and Marlboro Chapter No. 61, Order of the Eastern Star, a loving mother, wife and friend who will be greatly missed by all. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 4-8 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, MD. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 17, at 10 a.m at Cheltenham United Methodist Church, 11111 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD, with interment immediately following in the church cemetery. A luncheon will follow in Furgang Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cheltenham United Methodist Church, PO Box 146, Cheltenham, MD 20623.
