Charles (Charlie) Michael Sullivan, 81 years old, of Huntingtown, Maryland, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 16, 1943 to parents John and Evelyn Sullivan. He loved playing baseball from a young age and showed great promise, playing for his high school alma mater, DeMatha Catholic High School, and later moving on to pitch at the University of Maryland during his matriculation there. Charlie cut his teeth on teaching and coaching at Potomac High School in Oxen Hill, Maryland, where he spent 15 years. However, his loyalty and dedication to DeMatha never left him, as his love of the game and teaching others led him back to DeMatha, this time as a beloved and respected mathematics teacher, driver’s ed instructor, and long-time head baseball coach, “Sully.” The 24 years he spent as an educator and coach at DeMatha have left a lasting legacy among everyone who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his father, John, and mother, Evelyn. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary, his daughter, Sherry Speed (David), and two sons, Michael (Robin), and Kenny. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jennifer Byrnes (Spencer), Kyle Speed, Bradley, and Shelby, as well as two great-grandchildren, Colton and Beckett Byrnes. He was a truly great man and will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
