Charlotte Smith Macchio died quietly at her home in Camp Springs, Maryland at the age of 92. Charlotte was a loving and caring woman who thoroughly enjoyed life. She was born on November 13th 1920 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Lillian and Bertrand McGinniss. She was raised in Capitol Heights, Maryland, where she attended Capitol Heights Elementary School and Maryland Park High School prior to obtaining a degree from Temple Secretarial College. Her secretarial skill enabled her to land an Administrative Assistant job at the Washington Navy Yard. At the young age of 12, she was smitten with the young man who lived across the street. His name was Sylvester Smith and he would often sit on her front porch and play the ukulele. Years later they would get married and, moveto Coral Hills, Maryland where they raised two daughtersand a son.Her husband,Sylvester, was in the decorating business and Charlotte developed a keen sense of style that was obvious to anyone who visited their home. She always loved perusing decorating magazines for the latest trends, but was never afraid to try out her own artistic geniusFamily was of the upmost importance to Charlotte and she truly enjoyed raising her children.She was totally dedicated to their happiness and spent countless hours taking her girls to dancing school and watching Little League games. Her home was the gathering place for the young people in the neighborhood, and she always made each child feel important and welcome. Her fairytale life of family happiness came to an abrupt end in 1974 when her husband suffered a fatal heart attack. To fill the void in her life, she took a job as the house mother for the Nursing School at the Washington Hospital Center. She quickly became a substitute mother for many of the students there. Her strong will to trust in God sustained her and years later she attended a Parents Without Partners dance where she met her second husband, Joseph Macchio. Joe was the father of 5, and Charlotte warmly opened her heart to his children and grandchildren,delighted to have an extended family to spoil. .Those who have met Charlotte know that she was a lady in the true sense of the word. She was kind and considerate, compassionate, and loving. She would do anything in her power not to hurt anyone’s feelings and would do without so that she could give to others, She was an awesome mother and a spectacularNanny. She will be truly missed but her spirit will live on in the family she so dearly loved.She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Morrison and Robyn Beaulieu and her son Sylvester Smith. Other survivors include her sister Donna Marie Johnson, her grandchildren. Tammy Lucas, Dante Crescenzi, Erica Templeton, Briana Graves, Brett Smith, and Dylan Smith, 9 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
