Donald R. Lloyd

February 28, 1946 — July 8, 2016

Don was born in Washington, DC on February 28, 1946. Don spent his formative years in Washington, DC until his family moved to Camp Springs, Maryland when he was a teenager. After graduating from Surrattsville High School in May of 1965, Don went to work with his father at E.F. Hutton. In July of 1968, Don was drafted into the United States Army and he proudly served in Vietnam until he was honorably discharged on May 15, 1970. While serving in Vietnam, Don distinguished himself and earned several medals to include a National Defense Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Vietnam Service Medal. Shortly after returning from Vietnam, Don was blessed with the birth of his first son, David, on November 17, 1970. He was then blessed with his second son, Neil, on January 2, 1976 and his daughter, Kristina, on November 28, 1978. Don took great pride in being a small business owner. His low pressure exterior cleaning business, Lloyd Roof Cleaning, has been providing superior service to customers throughout the Washington metropolitan area for over 30 years. One of Don’s favorite pastimes was roller-skating. He was an avid skater, spending many days and nights at the skating rink in Clinton. He was a member of the R & B Rollers Skating Club for a number of years. Don’s love of roller-skating led him to his greatest love – his wife Bonita. Don and Bonita met in March of 1993 at the skating rink in Clinton and the rest is history. They celebrated their love in marriage on October 5, 1996. Don was blessed with his stepson, Brandon, as a result of his union with Bonita. Bonita is a woman of God, and sharing her love of Him inspired Don to reconnect with God, changing his life for the better. Worshipping at Imani Temple led Don to become a Deacon Candidate there. Don then followed the advice of Bishop Greening of the Church of St. Martin de Porres and began pursuing religious studies. Don started his formal religious education at Evangel Cathedral; he subsequently enrolled in Calvary Christian College to complete his religious education. On September 7, 2007, our entire family celebrated as Don was conferred a Bachelor’s of Biblical Studies degree from Calvary Christian College. Shortly thereafter, Don was ordained as Deacon of St. Martin de Porres. Don was exuberant about sharing his love of the Lord with others. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at church. He assisted those who needed to reconnect with God by participating with the Men’s Ministry and the Revival Tent Ministry. Don also facilitated marriage counseling and greatly enjoyed officiating weddings – especially for nieces and nephews. Family was so important to Don. It has been said countless times that no one has ever had a “bad time” at a Lloyd Family gathering. Whether we were celebrating a birthday, a milestone, a wedding, a life, or nothing at all, there was always a lot of love and laughter. Don took special delight in being a grandfather to the nine children who have the privilege of calling him “Grandpa” and “Pop Pop.” He also adored his dogs, Uriah and Caleb. In addition to roller-skating, Don had several other hobbies to include skiing, hiking, and traveling. He and Bonita traveled extensively throughout the United States and enjoyed several cruises, with their favorite ones being to the Caribbean. Don felt extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel to the Holy Land of Israel twice in his lifetime. On July 8, 2016, Don died unexpectedly at work; he was 70 years old at the time of his death. Although our family is heartbroken, we take comfort in knowing that Don is now dwelling in the house of the Lord, beholding the beauty of the Lord, and inquiring in His temple (Psalm 27). Don is survived by his beloved wife Bonita Lloyd; son David Lloyd and daughter-in-law Kara Kerr Lloyd of Stevensville, MD; son Neil Lloyd of San Diego, CA; daughter Kristina Lloyd of Roanoke, VA; stepson Brandon Brown and daughter-in-law Ebony Brown of Capitol Heights, MD; sister Juliette “Julie” Graham and brother-in-law Donald Graham of Aquasco, MD; brother Steve Lloyd and sister-in-law Ann-Mari Pierotti of Washington, DC; sister-in-law Jody Jerow Lloyd of King George, VA; mother-in-law, Joanne Moore of Washington, DC; seven sisters-in-law; grandchildren Brent Miller, Lauren Lloyd, Katelyn Lloyd, Khyren Brown, Bernard Joseph “Seph” Funk IV, Alicia Lloyd, Kamren Brown, Jordan Lloyd, and Scott Lloyd; great-grandchild Jocelyn Lamb; and a host of nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Barbara Lloyd, and his brother, Michael Lloyd. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Donald R.
