On Monday, August 28, 2023 Doris Louise Totherow Homan (age 98) passed peacefully in Catonsville, MD. She was born September 17, 1924 in Fairfield, Alabama, to Percy Eugene Totherow and Bertha May Stamps. Doris grew up in Alabama and graduated from Hueytown High School in 1942. She moved to Washington, DC where she worked at the Pentagon. It was here that she met Roy Homan at a dinner party hosted by a friend of hers. Roy had been in the Navy in WWII in the Pacific theatre. They married in July of 1946. They made their home in Washington, DC and Forest Heights, MD before moving to Temple Hills, MD. They are survived by three children, Rebecca Homan Wallenfelt (Jack), Phillip Homan (Patti) and Roy Dean Homan.
In 1960 the family took their first trip to the area of Daytona Beach, Florida, and enjoyed it so much that it quickly became their annual vacation. Doris later became employed as a secretary at the Grace Brethren Church in Temple Hills, MD. Doris enjoyed and taught sewing and also enjoyed dancing. She and Roy were also both active members in the VFW.
Upon the retirement of both Roy and Doris, in 1994 they made the big move to Edgewater, Florida, just south of Daytona. Roy and Doris enjoyed traveling including a trip to Hawaii. Roy passed away in 1996 but Doris didn’t slow down, she just got busier. She traveled with other seniors in the Edgewater community and even joined the local hospital’s “Bed Pan Band”, performing for other seniors and shut-ins. She remarried in 1999 to Walter Bohm and they continued to travel to places like Alaska, Colorado, and Walter’s home state of Michigan. After Walter passed away in 2009 Doris often traveled by car with her girlfriend, Jan, a fellow Floridian and former secretary at GBC, back to Maryland to visit her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, but she loved it even more when they came down to visit her. Living in Florida also gave her the opportunity to see more of her west coast (Clearwater) cousins, Lynn and Tyrone, and their kids and grandkids.
She lived a full life, was always busy, was a people person, was loved by many and will always be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be Friday, September 8, 2023 at Calvert Grace Community Church in Owings, MD. Visitation is at 10 a.m., service is at 11a.m., followed by a repass in the Family Life Center. Burial will be in Florida at a later date.
