Betty Dobbs,83, of Upper Marlboro, MD died peacefully at her home on May 23, 2015. She was the loving wife of the late William Mayo Dobbs; beloved mother of Robin Matty (Tim) of West Newton, PA, Cheryl Barr (Craig) of Purcellville, VA, Tracey Dobbs of Accokeek, MD, and the late Kimberly Flowers (surviving husband Gary of Mechanicsville, MD); dear sister of Bobby King (Billie Joyce) of West Minster, CO; loving grandmother of Matthew Barr (Shannon) of San Diego, CA, Mark Barr of Arlington, VA, Samantha Flowers of Hughesville, MD and Jessica Flowers of Myrtle Beach, SC. Born and raised in Washington, DC, she was the 11th of 12 children of the late Eleanor (Nee Ready) King and Ernest S. King. She met, Bill, the love of her life while he was In the Navy. They met in Washington, DC, and were married on December 28, 1954. They were married for 49 years, 2 months when Bill passed away in 2004. After Robin, Cheryl, and Kim were born, they moved to Forestville, MD in 1963 just in time for the arrival of daughter #4, Tracey. They moved to her current home in Upper Marlboro in 1984. Betty started working after high school as a ticket agent at Union Station. She then went to work for the Seaboard Coastline railroad. She left the railroad to work jobs closer to home, finally settling at the FBI as a file clerk. She retired from the FBI in 1994. Betty was a long time member of VFW Post 482 in Forestville. She volunteered at VFW fundraisers, sold Buddy Poppies and was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary. In recent years, she joined an exercise group and found that she loved the exercise, fun, and camaraderie of the group. Betty appreciated all kinds of sports and was glad when the Nationals moved back to Washington; but her true sports love was the Washington Redskins. She had season tickets, enjoyed going to the games, and discussed their wins and losses with all and sundry. Family was very important to Betty. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Over the years she spent a lot of time at their special events and was proud of the adults that they had become. Her grandchildren became her pride and joy and she watched over them to make sure that they knew they were supported and they were never far from her thoughts.Throughout her life, Betty made lifelong friends and enjoyed keeping in touch with them. Her friends and family were what made life so special. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Betty may be directed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 901 E St. NW, Washington, DC 20004
