Elizabeth W. Shumate

Elizabeth W “Bet” Shumate, loving mother of Robert R. Shumate, Barbara L. Hutchison, Nancy E. Shumate, James E. Shumate and John C. Shumate. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Mrs. Shumate's husband of 54 years, Robert F. Shumate passed away in 2001. Bet had lived in the District Heights area over 30 years, Prince Frederick 10 years, Dunkirk three years and Solomon’s three years. After raising her family, Bet decided to return to college and pursue a career in nursing. She graduated from the P.G. County Hospital School of Nursing with and LPN degree specializing in geriatric care. She retired from nursing in 1993. Bet was a dedicated volunteer for the Girl Scout Council of the Nations Capitol. She served as the Camp Director of Camp Plato for many years and had received numerous awards for her work. She also served on the Girl Scout Council Board. Bet also enjoyed the theater. She had participated in many local community productions of USO performances. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 8, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, MD. Memorial Donations may be made to a charity of your choosing.
