Elmer Lewis “Smitty” Smith, age 86, of Indiana, PA , formerly of Upper Marlboro, MD, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Indian Haven. \n He was born in 1923 in Seat Pleasant, MD, to Charles and Henrietta Nimmo Smith.\n Smitty was a founding member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Upper Marlboro, MD; the Upper Marlboro Lions Club, having served two terms as president; a Master Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild; and the Assoc. for the Advancement of Ethical Hypnosis.\n He was a veteran of both WW II and the Korean War, having served 10 years in the US Army as an enlisted man and as a 2nd Lieutenant in both Japan and Korea. He received the Bronze Star during his service in the Korean War, and served in the Counter Intelligence Corps.\n He was a graduate of the Maryland Park High School, and the University of Maryland where he earned a BA in Psychology.\n Smitty was employed by the Federal Government with the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Dept. of Health and Human Services as a Personnel Relations Officer. Following retirement he was a practicing Hypnotherapist.\n He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Joyce Carroll Smith, currently residing in Indiana, PA, and formerly of Upper Marlboro, MD; three daughters, Torie Holeman and husband Bill, Baton Rouge, LA; Ember DiSalvo and husband Frank, Upper Marlboro, MD; Kimberly Young and husband Keith, Indiana, PA; eight grandchildren, Alexis Holeman, Lauren Holeman, Frank DiSalvo, Jr., Thomas DiSalvo, Dillon DiSalvo, Emberlein DiSalvo, Chelsea Young, and Natalie Young.\n He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother Charles A. Smith.\n Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, is entrusted with the local arrangements. A visitation will be held at the Lee Funeral Home, Clinton, MD, with a funeral service conducted at the Bethel United Methodist Church.
