Elvyra J. Sheehan, 93, of Kent Island, Maryland and Marina del Rey, California passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018. Plans were in the making for her 94th birthday on June 16, 2018…when instead there will be a celebration of her life in Marina del Rey, CA. Wife to Major LeRoy C. Sheehan, USAF, of 55 years, Mrs. Sheehan is survived by her children and their spouses: Maureen Glovins of Maricopa, Arizona, Robert and Lisa Sheehan of Kent Island, Maryland, Paul-Michael and Nancy Sheehan, also of Kent Island, and Laurane C. Sheehan of Marina del Rey, California; her 7 beloved grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as family and friends that span the globe. Elvyra was born in New York of Italian immigrants, Rosalia Aliazzo and Nunzio C. Niosi. She was the youngest of 5 siblings: Corinne Niosi Dixon, Clare Niosi Falkner, Jerome Niosi and Emil Niosi. From New York, she traveled the world with her husband, “Roy.” Their romance began upon Roy’s return from World War II, while she was working at Mitchel Field Air Base and singing as a USO performer. They made homes throughout their Air Force tours of duty in San Antonio, TX, Colorado Springs, CO, Tampa, FL, Biloxi, MS and Wiesbaden, Germany. From Germany the family moved to Maryland. Elvyra was the Executive Secretary for the Hecht Company for 27 years. She was offered the prestigious position of Personal Secretary to the President of the company, but turned it down to avoid missing dinners with her family and the valuable time she said she’d miss if she’d taken the job. Family wasn’t a hobby for Elvyra. It was her passion and the center of all things to her. Her hobbies included entertaining, fashion, Scrabble (she was a phenomenal player and competitor), movies, crocheting, knitting, cooking (always seeking out new recipes), music, new “tools” for the kitchen, coin collecting, birds, reading mystery novels and fine dining. Her favorite flowers were yellow roses. Her friends at Firehouse Station 63 in Venice, CA came to sing Happy Birthday to her for her 93rd birthday where she spent a day in the sun with friends and family, celebrating on into the night. Elvyra loved a party...to go to, to plan for and reminisce over. She loved music, anything from the Italian composers and songs she grew up with…Funiculì Funiculà, Puccini and Vivaldi, to Big Band music, to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, to Creedence Clearwater Revival, to the Oak Ridge Boys. She and Roy loved to dance and she often talked about the dreams she had of the two of them dancing. Elvyra J. Sheehan was a beautiful woman inside and out. She will be deeply missed but asked that everyone celebrate her passing, not to mourn it. This was a life well-lived, much loved with abandon and abundance that touched everyone she met.
