Fred was born on October 4, 1931, in the District of Columbia to Edward and Etolia Adams. Fred was the third of six children. He attended Phelps Vocational High School. Following graduation from Spingarn High School and Fred later enlisted in the Marine Corp. He met his devoted wife of many years, Pattie Adams and married her. Of their union, two daughters were born. Government Service He joined government service and enjoyed many unique experiences. His overseas posts included living in Athens, Greece. That experience entailed enjoying the Greek culture, eating Mediterranean foods, visiting Olympic, and sightseeing the Santorini and Mykonos Islands. His family adjusted well during the period since they were stationed in Greece for three years straight before returning to the United States. Fred’s next post was in Monrovia, Liberia in West Africa. The post entailed getting adjusted to the climate, the food and the many cultures in the community. He enjoyed trying many different cuisines such as jollof rice and cassava leaves. Social Life Fred enjoyed hosting many different renowned guests including the likes of Nina Simone. Favorite past times included playing cards and dominoes. The family greatly anticipated returning the United States for one month annually to see family and friends for a good card game and eating some crabs and spending time with the Joyners.
