George Harold Cheverton, age 75, passed away on July 6, 2024, at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Despite a courageous battle with cancer, he faced challenges with incredible strength and grace. Born on August 20, 1948, in Alexandria, Virginia, George was the beloved son of the late James Garner Cheverton and June McCauley.
During the Vietnam War, George honorably served his country in the United States Army, earning a Bronze Star for his exemplary bravery and meritorious service. In recent years, he served as a Chapter Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 26, where he helped countless veterans and their families with claims that would allow them to access available benefits and services. His dedication to his fellow soldiers, veterans, and country was unwavering.
George spent his career as a dedicated truck and bus driver, touching the lives of many through his work and interactions. His hard work, reliability, and friendly demeanor left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
George was a devoted husband to Nancy for 35 wonderful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He was a proud father to Tracy Williams and Melissa Grieb and a caring grandfather (Pop-Pop) to Bella, Jaxon, Charlie, Avery, Jake, Jordan, and Landyn. He adored his niece Crystal DuMond and her husband Jason. George’s family was his pride and joy; he cherished every moment spent with them. He is also preceded in death by his beloved son, James Cheverton, whose memory he held close to his heart.
Following cremation, a visitation to honor George’s memory will be held on July 16, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Ln. Owings, MD 20736, with a service to follow at 12:00 PM. Once the services conclude, friends and family are invited to celebrate and honor George’s life at Mamma Lucia’s, 10136 Southern Blvd. Dunkirk, MD 20754. In accordance with his wishes, George will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in a private ceremony at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Organization, Chapter 26, https://www.davch26stmarysmd.com/get-involved, a cause close to George’s heart.
