George Burnett King

George Burnett King "Buddy"On Saturday, June 7th, 2008, George Burnett King, "Buddy" of Chesapeake Beach, MD formerly of Silver Spring, MD, 83, died under hospice care at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. George was born on September 14, 1924 in Washington, D.C. to the late Judith Smith and Harold Sherman King. He grew up in NW Washington, DC living in Petworth, Chevy Chase and Indian Spring Village. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High in June of 1943, Buddy served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was associated with The Flying Tigers, and served under the leadership of General Chenault. His military career ended in the inactive reserves in December of 1953. Buddy attended the University of Maryland in College Park, MD and then George Washington University in Washington, DC, while enlisted. In January of 1956 he married Louise Johnson. In his earlier years, Buddy was a delivery man for Times Herald and Washington Post Newspapers, and a telegram delivery man for Western Union often riding a bike every evening from Chevy Chase to New York Ave. in Washington, DC. Later on, Buddy became an entrepreneur. He was self-employed, managing University Amoco in College Park, MD from 1951-1955. He then joined his sister Judys husband, Norman Manning, and they partnered and formed King and Manning Amoco, in Montgomery Hills located in Silver Spring, MD, where he worked from 1956-1961. Then from 1961-1980, he owned and operated a company, King Rentals, in Rockville MD, which specialized in the rental of autos, trucks, camping trailers and various other heavy equipment. After selling King Rentals in 1980 he semi retired and started King Rent -A -Fridge, also based out of Rockville, MD, where he rented refrigerators and to college students in MD, DC and VA from 1980-1986. He retired in 1986 after a long prosperous career.Buddy has been a long time member of the Descendants of the Mayflower Society. He also had many hobbies. These include mostly collections. He collected mustang cars, coins, stamps, ivory, fine glass and jewelry. He also had an interest in "The Arts". He especially enjoyed Broadway Musicals. He had a special interest in the Civil War and spent a great deal of time studying and investing in the work of Mort Kunstler, who was famous for civil war paintings. He loved animals. Over the years he had many pets and was especially fond of dogs and cats. Buddy is predeceased by his sister, Judith King Manning. He is survived by his wife, Louise J. King, his daughters, Marilyn VanWagner, Carolyn Curro and Evelyn King, and his grandchildren, Lindsey, Jena, Adam, Eric, Carly, Jackie, Joe and Christy.Family will receive friends at the LEE FUNERAL HOME CALVERT, P.A., 8125 Southern Maryland Blvd. (Rte 4 & Fowler Rd.) Owings, MD on Thursday, June 12 from 2 to 4 pm & 6 to 8 pm. Service will be held at Grace Brethren Church of Calvert County, 9810 Old Solomons Island Rd. on Friday, June 13th at 10 am. Interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, MD.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions maybe made to the American Diabetes Association.
