George Everest Sullivan

GEORGE E. SULLIVAN Ft. Washington, MD and Orono, Maine George, age 73, died at Providence Hospital in Washington DC on February 17, 2017 from complications of AML. George was born June 1, 1943, the son of Everest J. Sullivan and Marion (Bowers) Sullivan in Athens, GA. He was the 5th of 7 siblings. George graduated from Orono High School in 1962. Upon graduation he joined the US Air Force and served 8 years, including a tour in Viet Nam. After his honorable discharge he joined the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, serving in the 5th District until his retirement in 1990. While on the MPDC he made a successful apprehension of a person who travelled from Massachusetts to DC with a trunk full of guns and ammunition in order to inflict harm on then Secretary of State George Schultz, for which he received multiple merits, awards, recognition, etc. During his lifetime, George was a motorcycle enthusiast, owning a 1957 Harley Davidson. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, collector of Civil War memorabilia, participated in many Native American Powwows in the mid-Atlantic states and was a self-taught banjo player. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and was able to have one again this past summer. George’s family was extremely proud of his service to our country and the law enforcement community for which he served with honor and distinction. We looked forward to his rare visits home to Orono where he would regale us with his many life stories and unbound sense of humor, and on occasion through the years, some of us were lucky enough to visit him in Maryland. His letters and phone calls were colorful and humorous and always left us with a smile on our faces and a scratch of our heads! That was George. George was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife, Jeannie M. (Quattrocicchi) Sullivan, and Sister Donna Coulombe. He is survived by sisters: Marlene Doucette, Betty St. John and Wanda Cunningham of Orono, ME, Marion (Mickey) Bell of Conway, MO, brother: James and his wife Carol of Old Town ME, and 16 nieces and nephews, and his beloved toy poodle and constant companion, Prince (aka Boo-Boo). George will also be sadly missed by his Maryland “family,” Dan and Nancy Justice, close friends and neighbors, and his former MPDC partner Jose Acosta, his wife Gloria and their children, to whom George was surrogate “Uncle George.” There will be a visitation on Thursday, February 23, 2016 from 12:30 pm until time of Funeral Service at 1:30 pm at Lee Funeral Home, Inc. 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, MD 20735. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Rd, Clinton, MD 20735. A summer celebration of George’s life will be held in Orono, Maine to be announced at a later date.
