Gregory (Greg) Johnson of Waldorf, Maryland, passed away peacefully in his sleep in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, December 9, 2019, at the age of 31. Greg was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 29, 1987 to Marsha (Endo) and Bernard Alton Johnson. Greg fought his whole life with difficulties of prematurity (11 weeks early) to years of mental illness. Yet he was able to achieve a brown belt in Taekwondo, play baseball on all-star and travel teams, basketball and soccer teams, earned his bachelor of arts degree in social work at University of Maryland and was accepted into and was working toward his master’s degree in social work at University of Maryland Baltimore which was one of the top schools in the country for social work. As an adult, Greg enjoyed watching sports on TV, even on his phone when he didn’t have a TV to watch. He enjoyed all types of music, and playing the guitar. Greg’s passion was always to help others who were hurting or in need, even while he was struggling himself. His dream was to start a transitional age residential facility with its own school. Greg is survived by his parents Bernard and Marsha Johnson, his older brother Bernard (Clorissa) Gibson, and a host of aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and a multitude of cousins. He is preceded in death by his beloved grandfather Frank Aiji Endo and grandmothers, Alice Yuriko Endo and Alma Card Ricks. Greg wrote poetry from time to time. A quote from one of Greg’s poems is fitting for Greg’s last days: “Maybe all this is happening for a reason. I can finally live with peace, happiness, hope, and at last be free.” In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been set up in Greg’s memory at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
