Gwyneth “Gwen“ Wilhelmenia Spriggs Kelly, 88, of College Park, MD passed away September 9, 2023.
Gwen was born June 21, 1935 in Croom, MD to the late Walter James and Mary L. Savoy. Gwen attended Prince George’s County public schools. She worked as a cook for several years at the Dutch Pantry Restaurant in Bowie, MD. She also worked as a line server at George Meany Center, and belonged to Local 25, Hotel and Restaurant Employees & Bartenders International Union; where she retired. Gwen married twice; she married Melvin Spriggs, Sr. on December 31, 1955, and from that union had fourteen children. She later married Quintin Kelly in July 1996. Both spouses preceded her in death. Gwen was a member of Deliverance Church of Christ #1 for 45+ years; she loved her church family and grew spiritually from receiving the word of God by her Pastor, Bishop Bobby G. Holmes. She loved singing and was part of the adult choir at Deliverance for several years. Gwen loved cooking, bowling, board games, bingo, dominoes, and traveling (but not alone). Gwen loved her children, and worked extremely hard to provide a loving, nurturing, and stable home for them. She felt the greatest accomplishment in her life was rearing her children. Gwen was a friendly, caring, and compassionate person; and to know her was to love her.
In addition to her parents and spouses, Gwen was preceded in death by 8 bothers. She leaves to cherish her memory (14 children – 6 daughters and 8 sons) – Sondra Windsor, Melvin Spriggs Jr., Diane Spriggs, Francis Spriggs, Isabella Spriggs, Jock Spriggs, Calvin Spriggs, Jacqueline Spriggs, Michael Spriggs, James Spriggs, Jesse Spriggs, Myrtle Spriggs, Julie Horton, and William Spriggs. (24) grandchildren – Melody, Tanika, Ken, Calvin, William, Michelle, Sade’, Paul, Rondale, Samia, Tresee, Brandon, Christopher, Robert, Amber, Hunter, Michael, Dewaine, Justin, Grace, Cameron, Ryan, Sequoia, and Isaiah (25) great grandchildren, (1) son-in-law, (2) daughters-in-law, (6 siblings – 2 brothers and 4 sisters) – Walter Savoy, Earl Savoy, Eirly Johnson, Mary Rawlings, Carolyn Fletcher, and Rita Chew, and a host of relatives and friends.
