Harry Frederick Chambers

Harry Frederick Chambers, 103, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024, at his home surrounded by his Family. 

Harry was born on a farm on October 23, 1920, in Sussex County, New Jersey. He was the fifth of eight children. 

Harry is survived by his loving Wife of 50 years, Barbara. Daughter, Patricia Prince of Spotsylvania, VA. Son, Harry F. Chambers, Jr. of Woodstock, VA, and Daughter, Darlene Chambers of Port Republic, MD. 

His Grandchildren, Pam Gallahan, Melissa Prince, Jason Prince, Jessica Marshall, and Shannon Castillo (Steven), fifteen great-grandchildren, and ten great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Harry joined the United States Maritime Service in 1942 and received his training at the Officers Candidate School for Marine Engineers at Fort Trumbull, New London, Connecticut. 

He was discharged from the Maritime Service in 1946 and came to Washington where he obtained his third-class steam engineers license. He started his first job as a stationary engineer at the County Fair Bakery in November 1946. He was initiated into the Local 99, International Union of Operating Engineers on January 13, 1947, where he worked various jobs in the Washington D.C. area as an Engineer, Assistant Chief, and Chief Engineer. He was active in the Union serving various committees and as a member of the Executive Board.

In 1970 he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Claude W. Brown, who had retired as Business Manager.

Along with being Business Manager, he also served on many committees for the International Union of Operating Engineers and the community such as:

Member South Atlantic Conference Executive Board – 1977-1992

Member International Stationary Advisory Committee – 1985 to present.

Member International Curriculum Committee – 1980 to present.

Member D.C. Building Code Advisory Committee – 1988-1992

Member P.G. County Board of Registration for Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning – 1985-1992

Charter Member Food and Allied Services Trades Council D.C. and Executive Board Member – 1976-1992

Member of Metro Washington Labor Council Executive Board

Member of International Stationary Apprenticeship Committee – 1986 to 1992.

The family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennfier Lane, Owings, MD 20736 on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Wednesday, May 15, 2024 from 11:00 am to the start of the Funeral Service at 12:00 pm in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Chesapeake Highlands Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3270 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD 20676.
