On Monday, May 22, 2023, Herbert Eston Baltimore (affectionally known as B’more or B’mo) departed this life and entered into eternal rest. B’more was born on September 23, 1938, in Washington, DC, to the late Aubrey and Georgia (Autry) Baltimore.
After receiving his education from the DC public school system, B’more enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his service years, he was stationed in various locations including Spain, Alaska, Arizona, New Jersey, Delaware, and South Carolina, and had short-term deployment to various places such as Italy and Turkey. His area of specialty was as an airplane mechanic. After 22 years of military service, his final duty station was Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland.
While stationed in Sumter, South Carolina, B’more met Patricia Randall at a nightclub. They married on September 30, 1961, at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church in Washington, DC. From this union, they had two daughters, Janice and Valerie.
In 1978, B’more began his second career as a bus driver with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). He retired in 2004 as a street supervisor after 26 years of service.
B’more was a devoted Washington Nationals and Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) sports fan. (He even taught his girls how to swing a bat and throw/catch a ball!) He loved music, especially old school R&B classics. Some of his favorite singers included The Platters, Marvin Gaye, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Otis Redding, Chicago, and various singers produced by Motown. B’more also had a love of old cars, especially Dodge Chargers.
B’more leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Patricia, his daughters, Janice and Valerie, and a host of nieces and nephews. His brother, George Baltimore, and sister, Peggy Fleming, preceded him in death.
