Eleanor Hope Tickell, of California, MD passed away peacefully on March 9, 2020 at the age of 95 years. Hope was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, May 29, 1924, the daughter of Eleanor (Atwood) Hooker and Miles E. Hooker. Beloved wife of the late George “Tick” Tickell; devoted mother of Faith Elizabeth Treadwell and her husband Warren “Lee” Treadwell of Millersville, MD and her late daughter Ann C. Crispin and her surviving husband Michael Capobianco of Hughesville, MD; dearest sister of the late Carol Bibbins; loving grandmother of Jason Paul Crispin and his wife Melissa Spicer of Waldorf, MD. During the early years of her marriage to George, he served in the Merchant Marines and was often at sea. Later, when Ann and Faith were born, they moved to Southern Maryland and Hope worked as a kindergarten school teacher in Prince George’s County, teaching primarily at Surrattsville Elementary and also at Tanglewood Elementary. Many of those students, now grown, remember her with great fondness. Always proud of her New England heritage, she was a long-standing member of the Mayflower Society. Her favorite place in the world was Cape Cod. While always very proper, she was a warm presence to her family, telling fascinating stories from her early life and always putting together a sumptuous family meal at holiday time. Hope had the ability to create a wonderful buffet of small plates to accompany any meal. Hope was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hollywood, MD and participated in the church choir. She had a lovely singing voice well into her nineties, but had to drop out of the choir because of failing eyesight. Hope loved old musicals, especially “White Christmas” and could sing along in perfect tune. In addition to her love for singing, Hope loved to read. She was also an avid collector of many things, most particularly a huge fan of the Dickens’ village pieces, which were displayed every Christmas. She was very fond of cats, particularly “Blackie” and his predecessor, “Mickie.” Hope held a passion for many forms of art and took great joy in her knowledge of classical artwork and design, with a special interest in Roman and Greek history. Her trips to Italy and Greece were among her fondest memories. The family requests that in Lieu of Flowers donations can be made in Hope's name to the Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation, John and Cathy Belcher Campus, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena Md, 21122, phone (443)837-3385.
