Howard Hugart "Smitty, Doc, Buckwheat, Hoogie" Smith passed peacefully and surrounded by family on April 22, 2018, in Leonardtown, MD at the age of 73. Howard was born on August 13, 1944, in Lookout, West Virginia to Opal and Buster Smith. He graduated from Nuttall High School and entered the Army. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Maryland. Working as an expert carpenter, he met and married the late Dorothy H. McGhee in Clifton Forge, Virginia on April 14th, 1975. They spent over 40 years together. Howard loved to garden, spend time with his family (including his little Chihuahua star), read his bible and watch crime shows, Swamp People, and Bootleggers. To him, the most important things in life was his family and his faith. His family will remember him as a kind, quick-witted and loving man who was always there for them, and who was always proud of them. He will be forever in our hearts and greatly missed. Howard is survived by his daughter, Candris Ogle; grandchildren, Shannon and Charles Bingham; great-grandson, Cameron Bingham; sister and brother in law, Bertha and Opie Hanshew; sister and brother in law, Carol and Jerry Berry; brother and sister in law, Clarence and Sherry Smith; future grandson in law, Brandon Heaney. He is preceded in death by his wife of 40+ years, Dorothy; his parents, Opal and Buster Smith; and brother Buster “Buzzy” Smith Jr. A funeral is scheduled for May 4th, 2018 at Lee Funeral Home – Clinton. The viewing will begin at 10:30am with a service at 11:30am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Howard’s life.
