Inez Loretta Dines Hawkins was born March 6, 1918 in Washington, D.C. to William Dines and Charlotte Dines Dotson. She attended St. Augustine's Church and was educated at St. Augustine's Catholic School in Washington, D.C. She met Raymond Carroll Hawkins, the love of her life, on the dance floor. They were joined happily in marriage on April 19, 1938. Thereafter, she moved from Washington, D.C. to Clinton, Maryland where they began their life together. Inez began her career as a domestic worker. She worked for the Prince George's County School System until her retirement in 1987. Inez's home had doors that always swung on welcome hinges to her family, friends, and the community at large. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and especially loved the times she shared with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Inez was so excited when Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. She said she never thought she would live to see a Black president. On her 90th and 95th birthdays, she received acknowledgements from President Barack Obama, Maryland State Senator Mike Miller, and Congressman Steny Hoyer. Senator Mike Miller attended her 90th birthday celebration and presented her with a Certificate of Recognition. She also enjoyed gardening, walking, cooking, and baking (her famous rolls). Inez enjoyed sports, especially football and basketball. She was a die-hard Redskins fan. Inez was preceded in death by her parents William Dines and Charlotte Dines Dotson; stepfather Henry Dotson; husband Raymond Hawkins; sisters Dorothy, Mary, and Ruth; brothers John and William; son James Carroll; grandsons Larry and Donnell; and great-grandsons DeAngelo and Alec. Inez leaves to cherish her memory eight children: Nina Green, Peggy (Raymond) Marshall, Jean Marshall, Paul (Jackie), Robert, Richard (Betty), and Ruth (Carlin) Penny; Pearl Hawkins (wife of the late James Carroll); 29 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; two nieces: Mary Dixon and Juanita Hooper; four cousins: Catherine Brooks, Ruby Gross, Florence Braxton, and Harriet Parker; and a host of other relatives and friends.
