James Thomas Barnes, 84, of Fort Washington, MD, passed peacefully with his family by his side Friday, March 28, 2025.
James was born July 16, 1940, in Virginia, to the late Myrtle and Jesse Barnes, and raised between Maryland and Virginia. At a dance at the Chantilly Virginia Firehouse, James met Judith Hafer, who would become Mrs. Judith Barnes, September 19, 1960.
James was a talented drummer, playing for 20 years all over the Washington, D.C. area. One of his greatest accomplishments was purchasing property and building his own house in 1968 in Fort Washington, Maryland, then later in the 90’s buying and renovating a second home in Cobb Island, Maryland.
He was an auto mechanic by trade and worked at Ourisman Chevrolet until he started his own business. His first was on Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia, then a second business in 1977, in Hyattsville, then sold the business in 2016.
James is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Judith Karen Barnes, the three children they share: James Barnes II (Teresa), Theresa Barnes Kubic (Scott), and Daniel Barnes.
He is also cherished by four grandchildren: Jamie Barnes, Jack Barnes, Sydney Kubic, and Maggie Barnes.
