James Clemon Chavis II

December 7, 1958 — October 2, 2015

James Clemon Chavis II, age 56, of Waldorf, MD passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, October 2, 2015. Born at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, he is the son of Esther (Maxile) Chavis and the late James Clemon Chavis. He is survived by his wife, Regina, his son James Clemon Chavis III, and his daughter Jacqueline Yvonne Chavis-Wei. After enlisting in the United States Air Force on November 16th, 1978 and subsequently completing a degree in Criminal Justice and Corrections at Texas State University, James completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in the United States Air Force in 1985. He was selected for further distinction by becoming a Special Agent of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), where he served as Special Agent in Charge (SAC) at two AFOSI Detachments and as an Instructor at the Air Force Office of Special Investigations Academy, where he subsequently retired from the Air Force, in 1995. Captain Chavis held a Masters degree in Public Administration from Troy State University and his numerous military awards and decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Organization Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal (1 OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon. After retirement from the military, James continued his civil service at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and in various positions within the United States Department of Justice - most recently as Senior Policy Advisor to national level criminal justice law enforcement programs at main Justice, in Washington DC. To find more detailed information on his career accomplishments, and the colleagues he inspired, see his LinkedIn profile, which will be kept open, in memoriam: https://www.linkedin.com/pub/james-c-chavis-ii/1a/a9b/1b9 James and his wife Regina were high school sweethearts in San Antonio, Texas and later reconnected while in college at Texas State University, where he was a celebrated varsity football athlete. These soulmates married on November 16, 1979 and enjoyed a loving marriage and friendship of 36 years, along with two wonderful children. James was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed sports, photography, history and weightlifting. James had a deep love and compassion for animals, which he instilled in his family by sharing his home with multiple rescued pets over the years. Watching reruns of Thundercats, Thundarr the Barbarian, and visiting the firing range were his preferred methods of relaxation. One of his most recent joyous milestones was the opportunity to give his daughter’s hand in marriage to Jay-ping Wei on September 19, 2015. A private family memorial will be held October 10th, 2015 at Lee Funeral Home in Clinton, Maryland, followed by a public memorial and interment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, at a future date, to be shared once confirmed. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family has asked that contributions be made in James’ memory to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), or the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). These organizations will send condolence cards on your behalf to the Chavis family, in recognition of your gift.
