James “Jim” Fitzpatrick Costello, Jr., passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2019, at his home in Huntingtown, MD, where he lived since 1986. Jim was born and raised in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C. and graduated from McKinley Tech. He was a US Navy reservist stationed aboard the USS Shannon and spent 28 years as an officer and detective sergeant of the Metropolitan Police Department, where he finished his career assigned to the U.S. Capitol. Jim was a devoted family man who had an enduring love for his wife Martha Mary [Manning] Costello, who preceded him in death in 2009 after 58 years of marriage. In addition to his loving wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James F. Costello, Sr. and Josephine [Keller] Costello, his brothers Richard, Francis and Vincent Costello and sisters Margaret Angers, Mary Finnin, Alice Turner, Rita Prime and Bernadette Houchens. Jim spent many years raising his seven children in Adelphi, MD, where he was active in his Roman Catholic parish of St. Mark the Evangelist, in his community and with the Adelphi Swim Team. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to a neighbor and was beloved by the many who knew him. He was a founding member of his church, Jesus the Divine Word in Huntingtown, and leaves behind many devoted friends, neighbors and colleagues. Jim loved music, movies and pool parties and had a passion for playing chess, poker and other card games, and telling jokes. He was well known for his humorous stories based on his real life events and with his broad experience of life, he kept his family and friends in stitches. He was a wonderful and loving grandfather and great grandfather. Jim leaves behind his beloved sister Dolores Cunningham of Chelmsford, MA, and his seven beloved children: Claire Barry of Columbia, MD, Mary Jo Smith (Greg) of Smithsburg, MD, Katie Costello (Kurt Walter) of Bowie, MD, James F. Costello III of Germantown, MD, Suzanne Costello (Gil Zalc) of Huntingtown, MD, Thomas Aquinas Costello (Janine) of Franklinton, NC, and Joan Costello (Jerry Clark) of Tampa, FL, 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Family invites friends to Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736 on Monday, September 16 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church, 885 Cox Road, Huntingtown, MD 20639 on Tuesday, September 17 at 10 am. Interment will follow at Southern Memorial Gardens, 10155 Ward Road, Dunkirk, MD 20574.
