James Joseph Manion, Jr.

James J. Manion, Jr.\nMarch 7, 1934- October 10, 2011\nA long time resident of Fort Washington, MD, passed on Monday, October 10, 2011, comfortably at home after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Adalene E. Manion, to whom he was married for 49 years; devoted son, James J. Manion, III, He was the third of six children born to Josephine and James J. Manion, Sr.He leaves to mourn his four sisters, Mary Jean Dawn (Ralph, Deceased), Twila Hines (Tom, deceased), Beverly Ledbetter (Kirk) and Joan Costigan (John), his siter -in-law Doris Breiterman (Allen); many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother, Arthur Manion and his parents.\nHe was born in Barberton, OH and raised in Washington, DC. A 1953 graduate of Anacostia High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1960 while working the DC Dept. of Parks and Recreation at Fort Greble, Safeway Corporation and the Washington Senators at Old Griffith's Stadium during baseball season. Upon his graduation, he joined the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he received many honors and awards. He retired on January 2, 1993 afer 38 years of federal government service. He was a avid fan and member of the University of Maryland Terrapin Club from which he recently received his 25 year membership pin.His friends describe him as kind and compassionate and the "eternal Optimist"\nIn lieu of flowers, donations may be amde in his memory to the Hspice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, MD 21401.
