Jean was born in Washington, D.C. to John Foley Sr. and Eva Burke Foley. Jean was the fourth of seven children, she had three sisters – Gertrude, Catherine “Kitty” and Beverly along with three brothers John Jr. “Jack”, Edward, and Frederic. Jean married her husband of 39 years, George Van Duzer Sr., in May of 1946. Jean and George Sr. went on to have three children of their own: George Van Duzer Jr., Gloria Pumphrey and Elizabeth “Betty” Ewing. Jean worked as a payroll clerk for the Payroll Office of Prince George’s County Public Schools and retired in 1991. Jean was a dedicated member of the Women of the Moose for many years, serving many committee chairs including Senior Regent and earning Academy of Friendship Degree as well as College of Regents. Jean also enjoyed memberships with The Elks Lodge, The Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion, playing video slots and watching The Washington Redskins. Jean was preceded in death by her husband George Sr. in 1985 and daughter Betty in 2002. She is survived by her son George Jr., his wife Wanda; her daughter Gloria Pumphrey, her partner Eddie Burroughs and her son-in-law James Ewing along with their families, other relatives and friends. A small service will be held to celebrate her life on October 29th, 2021 – 9:45 a.m. at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery chapel prior to her interment with husband George Sr. In lieu of flowers, please choose instead to make a donation to Disabled American Veterans in her honor.
