Jeannette Cecelia Asare

April 13, 1939 — January 17, 2022

Jeannette Cecelia Asare (Washington), age 82, passed away from cancer on January 17, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born at Gallinger (DC General) Hospital in Washington DC on April 13, 1939, to the late Norman and Mary T. Washington. She grew up in the Capitol Hill area of NE Washington, DC with her nine siblings: Thomas, LaJuan, Marion, Joseph, and Monica; four of her siblings preceded her in death, Jean, Michael, Paul, and Bernard. Jeannette received her education in Washington, DC where she attended Holy Comforter St. Cyprian Catholic School, Armstrong Adult Education and Margaret Murray Washington Vocational Education Center for Nursing. She proudly worked the majority of her nursing career at George Washington University Hospital where she retired. Jeannette absolutely loved being a nurse; she eagerly took on the role of “neighborhood nurse” for Garfield Terrace where she devoted much of her spare time caring for her family and neighbors. She had many hobbies which included quilting, cake decorating and baking. To bring joy to others, she passionately baked wedding and birthday cakes for those special occasions. Her love for baking carried over to a tradition of annually making Christmas Cookies with her family. This tradition, along with her cake decorating skills, were passed on to her children and grandchildren. Motherhood allowed her to express her loving nature by spending quality time with her children and grandchildren. She shared her love for music, introduced dances from her time, enjoyed annual cookouts, played in the snow, and watched classic movies with her family. In all, and most importantly, she taught them how to live life, to love and to care for others. In her later years, she moved to Ft. Worth, Texas in 2005. With her loving nature, she established and maintained a host of new friendships. She returned to the DC area in 2020. Jeannette was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her as her door was always open to those in need. Jeannette leaves to cherish her memory: five siblings, children: Maria Armstrong (Wayne), Loni Burton (Keith), George Washington who preceded her in death, Tena Washington (Rodney), Antonio Washington (Frances), Florine Douglas (Theodore, Jr) and adopted daughter Sandra Dargan; 15 Grandchildren: Tiana Chandler (James), Harold Beynum III (Khandra), Demetrius Beynum, DeQuinte’ Carter, Sheria Washington, Dominique Newsome (Alvin), Antonio Washington, Jr, DeVaughn Washington, Christopher Washington, Theodore Douglas III, Ross Washington, Ashley Riddick, Amea Douglas, Ramsey Washington, and Ramel Washington. Jeannette was blessed to have 25 Great Grandchildren, her uncle Joseph Washington, her dedicated First Cousin Verna Leftwood, her oldest and dearest friend Mrs. Reva Stephens and a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
