On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Jeremiah (Jerry) Smith, Sr., age 74, of Upper Marlboro,
Maryland went to be with his heavenly Father. He was born on November. 9, 1947, in Port
St. Joe Florida to the late Rayfield and Iona Smith.
Jeremiah grew up in Lynn Haven, Florida and attended the Bay County public school
system where he met Bettye Cain who became his high school sweetheart and the love of
his life. Jeremiah and Bettye married on July 31, 1967. Together they share two children.
After high school, Jeremiah joined the United States Marine Corps where he bravely,
honorably, and faithfully served our country for 22 years. He worked as the manager for
various dining facilities designated for military personnel and became a senior food team
auditor.
Upon retirement from the Marine Corp, Jeremiah and his family moved to Upper Marlboro,
Maryland. Here he started a janitorial business. He was especially proud of starting and
running his own business.
Jeremiah was an avid golfer and sports fan, he especially loved cheering for the Miami
Dolphins even though they hadn’t been to the Super bowl since 1984. He also had a love for
Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, and Charles Bronson movies and old westerns where the
guns never seem to need reloading. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Jeremiah was known as a proud and opinionated man who used colorful language to
express himself.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Bettye Smith, daughter, Danielle
Smith-Eason, (Carl Eason, Jr.), son, Jeremiah Smith, Jr.; granddaughters, Marquita Davis,
Carly Eason, and Paris Smith; sisters, Debbie Bailey and Rosemary Wade; brother, Johnny
Washington; Nephew, Shawn Bailey, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and close
friends. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
