Joan McClain Haselden, a long-time resident of the Upper Marlboro area, died Thursday the 22nd of September 2016 at Southern Maryland Hospital. Born in 1943 in Washington, D.C., Joan attended Ketcham elementary in Anacostia. She then moved to Camp Springs and graduated from Surattsville High School as a member of the National Honors Society in 1961. In late 1961 Joan met Stephen Osgood Haselden during teen group at Bells United Methodist church. They fell in love and married June 1, 1962. In a few short months they were blessed with their first child, Stephen Douglas, in 1963. Four years later they were blessed with their second child, Timothy Lee, in 1967. Joan worked for the National Park Service until having children and becoming a professional homemaker. Through her time as a homemaker, in addition to taking care of her family, she babysat over 50 children, each of whom she treated as her own child. Joan was a member of various churches, until finding her loving home at Melwood Church of the Nazarene. She was a Sunday school teacher, women’s ministries leader, and was very involved in her church. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed socializing with all of her friends and groups that she was a part of. Joan loved to play board games and card games and watch movies with her family and friends. She leaves behind her husband of 54 years, Stephen Haselden, her sons Stephen ‘Doug’, and Timothy, her grandchildren Jeremy, Mya, Jonathan, Timothy II, and Micaela, her great grandchildren Victoria, Nathan, Evelyn, and Nicholas, and a host of family and friends. Donations are requested to be made in lieu of flowers to Melwood Church of the Nazarene in her memory. All services will be held at Melwood Church of the Nazarene, 6906 Woodyard Road, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.
