Joan Maltagliati

May 25, 1930 — December 16, 2024

Joan Marie Maltagliati (nee Vogel) of Charlestown Retirement Community passed peacefully on  Monday, December 16, 2024 with her family by her side. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late John M. Vogel and Anna B. Vogel (nee Earhart) on May 25,1930.

During her formative years, she attended high school and was a proud graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame in 1948. From there she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, in Baltimore, receiving her certificate of completion in September 1951. She was certified as a Registered Nurse in January 1952, a career she loved. Joan dreamed of having a large family. Her dreams began when she met and ultimately married Mauro (Malt) Maltagliati in June 1954. After completing different duty assignments for Malt’s Air Force career, they started their family in January 1959, and continued with a child born yearly until December 1964. Joan loved being a mother and wife more than anything else. She was active in all of the children’s events, whether it was with the Camp Springs Boys and Girls Club, Brownies, Avalon Elementary School, Stephen Decatur Junior High, or Crossland High School. She attended as many of the sporting events of her children that were possible as sometimes two or three were playing at the same time on different teams.

Despite having six children, Joan was able to keep a clean home, do her grocery shopping and other errands, with all the children in tow. Once her children had grown, she went back to the career she first loved, nursing. She worked at a number of hospitals in the Washington DC area, and ended her career at Providence Hospital, in Washington DC. By that time, she was inundated with the next great loves of her life — her grandchildren. Besides her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her beloved husband Mauro (Malt), her son Paul, her brother Jack Vogel, and her niece Carol (Vogel) Rodman. Joan is survived by five of her children: Mike (Leslie), Jerry (Sharon), Tricia, Richard (Kelly), and Angela Wenzinger (Robert). Also, she leaves her 15 grandchildren: Gina (Chris) Lenhart, Jennifer (Everet) Anderson, Laura Maltagliati, Michael Maltagliati (Amy), Crystal Sullivan (Todd), Amber Peal (Gus), Austin Maltagliati, Maria Garrity (Jerry), Dominic Maltagliati, Victoria Settles (Rikki), Contessa Maltagliati, Vincente Maltagliati, Matthew Wenzinger (Kristi), Natalina Bacus (Robby), and Joshua Wenzinger. Others close to Joan who will miss her include her great grandchildren; Paul’s widow, Toni Maltagliati, and her friend, David Bottimore, who has been adopted into the family; and Joan’s cousin, Katherine Harper.

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 23rd from 9:30 am - 10 am for visitation at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, Maryland, with Mass of Christian Burial following. Although there will be no formal funeral procession, family and friends will meet for Graveside services (Rite of Committal) at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, Maryland at 12:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any expressions of love be made as a donation to the charity of your choice, in Joan’s name.
