John Hamilton Calhan

November 16, 1955 — May 2, 2022

John Hamilton Calhan, born on November 16, 1955, passed from this life on May 2, 2022, at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.

John is survived by his ex-wife, Barbara Calhan; their three children John Calhan II (Jeannette) of North Beach, MD; Megan Calhan of Annapolis, MD; and Ryan Calhan of Owings, MD; his grandchildren; John (Jack) Calhan III, Ben Calhan, and Finn Calhan, all of whom he adored. John is also survived by his siblings Michele Groot of Chesapeake Beach, MD; Robert “Bob” Calhan (Mary Jo) of Jacksonville, FL; Cecelia Atkinson of Kingwood, TX; and Kathleen “Kasey” McSorley (Mike) of Huntingtown, MD. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Calhan.

John was born the youngest of five, in St. John, Newfoundland. He traveled the world with his family while his father Robert served as a pilot in the US Air Force. They eventually settled down in Clinton, MD where he graduated from Surrattsville High School. In high school, John loved playing baseball and football and remained active after graduating, playing pickup games of football and softball. John married Barbara (Goddard) and began their life together in Clinton, MD. John and Barbara moved their family to Calvert County in the early 1990’s where he spent the rest of his life. John worked in the construction field for over thirty years, until he finally retired in April of 2022 as President of Washington Winwater. In his free time, John watched the Washington Redskins and Nationals with his sons and grandsons. John also loved to spend time at the beach, especially the Outer Banks of North Carolina. John’s favorite past time, by far, was spending quality time with his family and grandsons. He was often seen in his fold out chair at his grandson’s sporting events, cheering them on. John’s family knew him best as being full of dad jokes, a loving and dedicated “Pops” to his grandsons, and a best friend to us all. He will be greatly missed.
