John Arthur Epps

John Arthur Epps was born September 6, 1939 in Essex County, Virginia to the late Frank O. Epps and Eva Della Epps. He departed this life on December 10, 2023. He was preceded in death by his brothers James Epps and Frank R. Epps, his sister Mary Betty Jordan, and son Donald Epps.

John was educated in Essex County Schools in Virginia prior to relocating to Washington, DC with his family. After graduating from Armstrong High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1956 where he served on the USS Galveston (CL-93) and entertained the ship with his musical talents (singing and playing the guitar). Upon leaving the Navy and Reserves, he joined the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) in July 1967 as a Bus Operator. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1979, under the GI Bill, from the University of the District of Columbia in Architectural Engineering. He was accepted to George Washington University in Washington, DC for graduate school but chose instead to focus on his family and career. John retired from METRO as a Station Manager in Prince George’s County in March 1995.

After retirement he enjoyed teaching music, spending time with his grandchildren, exercising his engineering skills around the house, and assisting his neighbors with design and construction projects. John also loved watching old Western and Army movies, sharing stories about the family history, and communing with his old buddies from METRO.

John Arthur Epps lived a full life and will be missed dearly by his children: Barbara Epps, Leonette Epps-Norris, Casanetta Epps-Cummings (Michael), Sonya Williams (Enor), Daphne Epps, and John D. Epps (Jennifer), grandchildren: Tiffany Settles, Shadonna Epps, Yolanda Epps, Sam Epps, Jeremiah Epps, Aiyana Evans, Enor Williams III, Santana Williams, John Epps Jr., Jacob Epps, Tyisha Epps, Jamilla Epps, Chatel Royster, Davita Epps, Arshon Epps, Calvin Royster, Loretta Epps and Khalid Cummings, 18 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, and a whole host of extended family and friends who will cherish memories of him.
