John E. Matthews, Jr., lovingly known as “Jack” was born in Lakewood, NJ, on November 13, 1941 to Grace (Lane) Matthews and John Elmer Matthews, Sr. He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1959 and entered Lafayette College in Easton, PA, to study law, following in his father’s footsteps. He later transferred to Monmouth College in West Long Branch, NJ, where he obtained his Business Administration degree. While waiting for civil service clearance, he worked in Peoples National Bank, at which time he was drafted. Jack served two years active duty and four years reserve for the Army. He was proud of his tour of duty in Vietnam with the 18th military police brigade. After serving in the Army, Jack was offered a job with the U.S. Commerce department of the census. He devoted 30 years to the Industry Division. He played on the census bowling league and softball team. He loved to play chess and was the president of the census chess club. He also enjoyed hiking, camping, cruising, and listening to country music. Jack is survived by his loving wife Susan; his beloved daughter, Laura Sussan of Shelton, CT; adoring grandchildren Joshua, Natalie, and Jacob Sussan, all of Shelton, CT; his dear brother-in-law and wife, John and Mary Bayless. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Joseph Sussan. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
