Joseph Ray Colbert

July 21, 1927 — March 24, 2016

Joseph Ray Colbert, passed at his home in Clinton, MD on March 24, 2016 at the age of 88. Born in Cumberland, MD the son of the late Mary Carroll Colbert and Cecil C. Colbert, one of four sons. Ray grew up in Cumberland, graduating from Fort Hill High School. After high school, Ray enlisted with the US Marine Corps during the end of WWII. He served his country and was honorably discharged. After his discharge, he returned home to Cumberland. He met Betty Robertson on a blind date and the two married on September 21, 1946. The couple soon moved to Washington, DC in 1948. Ray followed his brother, Junior, there to help him with his construction and home improvement business opportunities. He stayed in the area since that time, raising his growing family. His wife pre-deceased him in 2010. Ray enjoyed shooting a good game of pool and loved to play cards. He enjoyed being places where people gather and meet and was a member of the Elks Lodge in Camp Springs, Moose Lodge, VFW in Camp Springs, American Legion in Clinton, Silver Hill Lyons Club and the Odd Fellows in Forestville. Ray is survived by his children, Sharon Thomas (Joseph) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Connie Mountjoy of Brandywine, MD and Kenneth Colbert of Clinton, MD; fiancé of Lynn Leonard of Clinton, MD; brother of Cecil Colbert, Jr. (Joane) of Pennsylvania; grandfather of Jason Thomas (Nikki) of Richmond, VA, Luckett Thomas of Upper Marlboro, MD, Debbie Wilson of FL, Raymond and Douglas Mountjoy, both of Brandywine, MD; great grandfather of Hayes Thomas, Cole Thomas, Sofhia Thomas, Emma Thomas, Michael Tayman, Ashleigh Witherspoon, Kailey, connor and Jaime Mountjoy, Brandon Wilson, Karissa Jennings and Reilley Smith; great-great grandfather of Julianne Wilson. Ray was pre-deceased by two brothers, the late Paul Colbert and the late Roy Colbert; three sisters, the late Annie Hazle, the late Virginia Stratton and the late Leota Flowers, and one granddaughter, the late Lori Lough.
