Joseph was an member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Sunderland, MD, The American Legion Post 206 (Chesapeake Beach), And The American Radio Relay League, Inc. He served in the US Navy, which was followed by 32 years of civilian service at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D.C. as an Electric Engineer.
