Joseph Peterson was born on May 5, 1936, in Perry County, Alabama, to Moses and Susie Mims Peterson. He was affectionately known as “Pete,” “Peter,” “Uncle Pete,” and “Joe Pete”. He was an avid car lover, an artist, and a graduate of Prince George’s Community College.
After high school, Joseph joined the U.S. Army to begin a career that spanned over 20 years, primarily in aviation. Joseph’s service took him to Vietnam and Korea. Among his honors, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroism and two Purple Hearts.
After retiring from the military, he continued his career in the federal government, serving in the General Services Administration until his retirement in 1991.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Graham David Peterson, Samuel Peterson, Vera Andrews, Dealia Chapman, Clara Brown, and Moses Peterson.
Joseph leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife Delores Peterson; his brother James Peterson (Radie); children, Jeffery Peterson (Michelle), Robyn Peterson, Joseph T. Peterson (Lisa), Margaret Peterson-James, Kimberly DeShields (Timothy), Deadra Welcome (Dale), Kahima Jones, Steven Jones, Shyrief Jones, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The Peterson Family extends its thanks to Yvette Gayles and Branford Edmonds of Family Home Healthcare, as well as many thoughtful neighbors in the Heritage of St. Charles community.
