***DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE DAY OF SERVICE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 2016*** Longtime resident of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, died from a massive stroke on January 17, 2016, following a short illness. Born in Bryson City, NC on April 3, 1921, to Grace and Vascal Williams, she grew up with her older sister Marian in Bryson City and Asheville, NC. She attended Mars Hill College and received her BA degree in Early Childhood Education from East Carolina Teachers’ College in Greenville, NC, later doing graduate work at George Washington University after moving to Washington, DC. After moving to the Upper Marlboro area, she taught second and third grade classes in Prince George’s County, Maryland for 30+ years and saw many of her students finish college and/or become parents and grandparents themselves. After retirement, she did substitute teaching in the public school system and taught reading to illiterate or stroke-impaired adults. A woman of deep faith, she lived a giving life. She was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro, helping to establish a mission from Forestville Baptist. Later she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years, and still later returned to First Baptist. Preceded in death 25 years ago by her beloved husband, Philip C. Duvall, she is survived by her loving daughter, Lynn Singley (Wayne), and beloved son, Van Duvall; beloved grandson Bryce Duvall (Beverly); and beloved great-grandsons David and Benjamin. She also is survived by grand-daughter, Jean Bailey (Dale) and treasured great-grand-daughter Carson, of Hickory, NC, and grand-daughter Karen Collins (Keith) and treasured great-grand-daughters Abigail and Lila of Golden, CO.
