Kenrick was born in Rosehall Corentyne, Guyana on June 10th,1944. He was the first of six children born to the union of the late Kenneth and Cynthia Smith. Kenrick attended Rosehall Scott Primary School, and later Saint Stephenʼs Primary School in Georgetown. Afterwards, he attended Tutorial High School where he excelled. In his youth, he was a track athlete winning numerous races. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Special Service Unit of the Guyana Army on October 26th, 1964, and followed up his military career by joining Guyanaʼs Police Force as an officer with a post at Sunset Station. Kenrick was married to the love of his life, Dezrie Edwards, for 51 years. They met in high school and were inseparable since then. On August 13th, 1966, they wed and were blessed with five children Sharon, Raye, Kenrick Ashford, DeWayne, and Vaughn. Throughout his life, Kenrick was a devoted husband and father. Equally so, he was a loving and devoted grandfather who loved and supported his twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild in every way. In 1969, Kenrick and his family migrated to the United States. He started off working in the nursing field, and then became a supervisor in the food industry until he retired to help his wife at the dental office. Kenrick Smith was a loving, charismatic, thoughtful, generous, and courageous man whose grandchildren lovingly referred to him as “Sugar,” “Pops,” or “Papa”. He loved his family deeply, and maintained a humble, quiet demeanor, precious smile, and joking personality. Connecting with people through sports and games is what he loved best. A great way of getting to know Pops was to sit down for a game of chinese checkers or dominos. Sports had a way of illuminating his big smile and infectious laughter.
