Laurie K. Smith, 54, of Huntingtown, MD passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, in her home lovingly cared for by her family and friends. Laurie was born in Rochester, NY, to Lynn and Barbara Koepke. After graduating from Gates-Chili High School in 1984, Laurie continued her education at SUNY-Fredonia, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She completed her education with a Masters Degree in 1993. Laurie is survived by her children Ryan and Katie Smith, her father, Lynn Koepke and her brother Todd Koepke (Georgia), and their children, Michael, Gracie, Caroline, and Johnny. Laurie also leaves behind countless friends and relatives. She is predeceased by her mother, Barbara Koepke, step-mother Barbara Sheehan, grandparents Franklyn and Eloise Koepke, and Harold and Doris Gee. Laurie’s love for teaching and learning was unparalleled. She taught in Calvert County Public Schools for over 20 years. Her students were her heart and soul and she truly loved each and every one of them. Those fortunate enough to have been in “Ms. Smith's” class have been forever changed by her compassion and her natural gift of teaching. Laurie lived by the words, “when given the choice, choose kindness.” Her smile, laughter, and love of life radiated onto every person she met. She inspired many to follow their dreams and carried the ability to make each person feel loved. Over the last four years, Laurie has demonstrated courage, strength, and a deep faith, teaching all of us to make the most out of every given day. Laurie’s gift of giving was something she cherished greatly. She said, “if you give a little you get so much more in return.” Her generosity and thoughtfulness were an inspiration to many. She loved “thy neighbors” and showed the importance of having a strong community. It truly takes a village! As a single mother Laurie demonstrated how to balance love, teaching and caring for her two children. Her personality and attitude during her battle affected the nurses and doctors who took care of her. Laurie’s positive attitude not only helped her but brought happiness and joy to all who crossed her path.
