Reverend Lawrence C. Manning1929 - 2012Reverend Lawrence Chapman Manning, son of the late John and Mary Manning, was born in Brunswick County, Virginia on April 5, 1929. He entered his eternal rest on Monday December 10, 2012.He received his public school education at House Manning Elementary School and James Soloman Russell High School, both in Brunswick County. Reverend Manning earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Masters of Divinity degree from Virginia Union University, in Richmond Virginia. He also earned a Masters of Education degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a state board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Virginia, and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.While a graduate student at Virginia Union University School of Theology in 1959, he was called to Galilee Baptist Church in Westmoreland County, Virginia, where he served as pastor for ten years. That same year, he was ordained by the 5th Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia.During his ministry at Galilee Baptist Church, Reverend Manning began his long and illustrious career in public education. He taught at A.T. Johnson High School for three years. On alternate Sundays, he served nine years as pastor of Gethsemane Baptist Church in King William County, Virginia. He later became assistant principal of Hamilton Holmes High School for six years.In 1970 Reverend Manning relocated to Washington, D.C. where he was briefly employed by the D.C. Public School System as a counselor-teacher. Later that year, he accepted a position with the D.C. Department of Human Services as an assistant principal. He was promoted to principal a year later.From 1972 to 1975, he continued to serve as principal to a number of other challenging schools under the auspices of the D.C. Government. He was continuously recognized for his effective leadership and innovative practices. Reverend Manning joined and became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., in 1973. Reverend Manning and his family became members of Ascension Lutheran Church in Landover Hills, Maryland in 1983.During his tenure as an educator, Reverend Manning received many awards for his outstanding work and performance, including a "Distinguished Service Award" and a "National Defense Education Act Fellowship." In 1985 Reverend Manning was designated as inter-agency liaison for the Department of Human Services and served in the position until his retirement in 1992, after twenty-two years of continuous service with the D.C. Government.Reverend Manning was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Andry Manning, he leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Angela (Marcus) Jackson, District Heights, Maryland: three sons Robert J. (Marsha) Manning, Lanham, Maryland, Omar (Wei) Manning, Highland Park, New Jersey, and Lawrence C. Manning Jr., Atlanta, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Tanisha, Omar Jr., William III, Ray, Ryan, Madison, and Robert Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
